Kottayam : The '111th Gail Kottayam Boat Race' will be held on the Thazhathangady river here on August 29. Addressing a news conference here today V N Vasavan MLA, Oil Palm India Limited Chairman, V B Binu, General convener, K C George and other leaders said Kerala Irrigation Minister N K Premachandran would inaugurate the race. Eight snake boats will participate in the race, besides those of other categories. Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and Petronet LNG Limited are the main sponsors of the race.

The Kottayam boat race, the oldest of its kind in Kerala was initiated in 1887 by the first collector (Divan-Peshkar) of Kottayam, T Rama Rao (1878-1890) in the Thazhathangady river. He is also hailed as the architect of Kottayam.

The boat race was being organised on the first Sunday after Thiru Onam since 1998.

As part of the boat race, the third Kottayam Mini Marathon race would be held tomorrow. Prominent men and women athletes, including the athletes from Railway, Army and Navy from Bangalore, Chennai and Kochi, would also participate in the Mini Marathon.
