Women to rule 489 panchayaths in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: The state election commission informed that the post of presidents in as many 489 panchayaths have been reserved for women candidates. 50 Grama Panchayats would have schedule cast women as president, while president post of 8 Grama Panchayats would have women from schedule tribe at the top post. There are 978 Grama Panchayats in the state.A decision on the Panchayats reserved for women would be taken on lot, to be done at the respective district headquarters.As per the Kerala Panchayati Raj (Second Amendment) Bill 2009, 50% seats are being reserved for women in local governing bodies.
