Major trade unions call for nation-wide strike on Sep 7

Thiruvananthapuram: Major trade unions in the country, except Bharatiya Majdoor Sangh (BMS), today called for a nation-wide strike on September 7, protesting against price rise and the Centre's decision to privatise profit making Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Addressing a press conference here, Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) state General Secretary M M Lawrence said trade unions affiliated to major political parties, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, UTUC, LPF and STU had given a joint call for the strike.

''It will be a nation-wide shut down on that day'', he said, alleging workers in the country were anguished over some policies of the Centre''.

Their major demands include proper implementation of labour laws, stop privatisation of profit making PSUs, provide enough money for unorganised workers, a social security fund and jobs for the people who lost their jobs during the global economic meltdown, he said.
