Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala cabinet today cleared a legislation for setting up Kerala State Maritime Board by merging
the port,Hydrografic survey wing and State Maritime Development Corporation. The bill prepared by the law department was approved by the cabinet, State Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after cabinet meeting here. Main objective was to coordinae the work connected with coastal development carried out by various departments and monitor maritime activities, he said.
The maritime board in Kerala will administer, control, regulate and manage all major and minor ports. It will also carry out various maintenance activities related to ships, sources said.
Apart from intensifying security measures across the coastline, the board will also take up steps for the conservation of interior
ports, sources said. The board would also evolve plans for integrated development of coastal areas across the state. In collaboration with Coastguard various security measures will also be implemented,sources said.
The board will also have powers to build new ports, shipyards and ship-repairing facilites. It can also identify new water corridors
to promote maritime tourism and inland water cargo, sources said. PTI
