    Forum seeks resignation of Minister

Kottayam: Blaming the state administration and Excise Minister P K Gurudasan in the wake of Malappuram hooch tragedy,
various christian organisations under Madhya Virudha Janakiya Munnani has demanded resignation of the ministers owning moral responsibility for the loss of many lives in the tragedy. The tragedy was the result of the violation of abkari rules with the connivance of government officials, Metropolitan of Mavelikkara diocese of Malankara Catholic Bishops Council Bishop Joshna Mar Ignatios told reporters here yesterday.

He said the excise department had facilated the functioning of spurious liquor cetres in the state. The practice of mixing toddy
with spirit brought illegally was prevalent in the state.

The president said the core issue which has led to the present situation is the reopening of over 1600 toddy shops after the LDF government came to power.

The Munnani requested political parties not to give ticket to those having links with liquor trade in the ensuing local body elections and general elections in the state.

Bishop Thomas Sammuel, head of CSI Madhya Kerala diocese said those associated with liquor trade are not eligible to represent the common man.

The demands of the Munnani will be highlighted by taking out a protest march and a public meet in Pala on September 19.
