Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala Government has decided to approach the High Court to release the service of a sitting District Judge to lead the judicial probe into the hooch tragedy in Malappuram district last week.
The decision was taken in the wake of the High Court's refusal to release the service of sitting High Court Judge to probe the issue, a release here today said.
Earlier, the government had approached the High Court to get the service of a sitting High Court Judge after the Cabinet had given its approval for a judicial probe into the tragedy, which claimed 26 lives after consuming illicit liquor from three shops at Kuttippuram, Vandoor and Thirunavaya in Malappuram district.
The government had already released a sum of Rs five lakh each to the kith and kin of those died in the incident and another Rs four lakh each to those who lost vision in the tragedy.
The government had already taken action against nine Excise Officials and arrested the owner of the toddy shops.
The Excise Commissioner, who made departmental probe into the incident, had already submitted his report to the state government on Thursday last.
