Tripunithara : Police on Monday held a person in connection with the Rs 1.5 crore online scam on Monday. The police team led by Tripunithura CI Biju K Stephen and SI S Jayakrishnan held Chackalackal Binu, 48, from Alapuzha who took voluntary retirement as UD clerk from the Tripunithara Government Ayurveda College. Police said Binu ventured into cyber crimes after voluntary retirement in 2001 saying he wanted to lead a spiritual life. He claimed that he is the data processor of international companies and invited applications for data entry operators. He operated an institution for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and offered Rs 10,000 salary every month after accepting Rs 2 lakh caution deposit. For a period of six months he regularly deposited the salary to gain their trust. After that he again accepted Rs 10 lakh as caution deposit by offering Rs 50,000 as monthly payment.

He introduced himself as the data processor of multi national companies and to make them believe, he created fake IDs of companies and regularly contacted them. The amount given as deposit was deposited by the employees in his own account which he made them beleive as the account of the company. The employees came to know about the crime when they did not receive their monthly salary.

Police booked a case on receiving a complaint from Tripunithura Thevarakkavu Shyam Sundar and Thevarakkavu Vaishanavam Jayasree. Binu looted Rs 60 lakh from them only. The investigation was conducted jointly by Tripunithura police and cyber cell. Binu was held from an inn near the Ambalapuzha temple.
