    Soorya Festival-2010 begins in Kerala

    Thiruvananthapuram : Asia's largest arts and music show, 'Soorya Festival-2010' began with the screening of a Malayalam film 'Aathmakadha' at the Tagore Theatre here today. Godrej Managing Director and Soorya India patron A Mahendra inaugurated the 111-day festival in which prominent artists from all over India would participate, Soorya Director S Krishnamoorthy said.

    A cultural programme by 30 women artists from Hyderabad was the highlight of the inaugural function, The event was organised by Soorya Stage and Film Society.

    The event would also have different sections, including a film festival, drama festival and dance-music festival. Miniature festivals would also be held in ten districts of the state and various cities, including Chennai, Bangalore, Pondicherry, Mumbai and New Delhi during the period.

    Adoor Gopalakrishnan's films -- 'Swayamvaram,' 'Kathapurushan', 'Nizhalkuthu', 'Nalupennungal' and 'Oru Pennum Randanum' -- would be screened at Kalabhavan theatre from November 21 to 25.

    Rajkumar Hirani's '3 Idiots', Mani Ratnam's 'Raavan' and Ram Gopal Varma's 'Rann' would also be shown at Kalabhavan theatre between November 21 and 30.

    It would feature 19 Malayalam films, including Raamanam, Paleri Manikyam, Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha, Yugapurushan and Sufi Paranja Katha.

    A painting exhibition would be held at the Tagore Theatre from September 22 to November 30.

    The Dance and Music Festival would open at the Tagore Theatre on October 1 with a carnatic vocal by K J Yesudas. Odissi by the Nrityagram, Bharatanatyam by Padma Subramaniam, Dr Gayatri and Mahati, Carnatic vocal by O S Thyagarajan and Kathak by Rajendra Gangani. It would also feature the Tamil play 'Vietnam Veedu'.

    The festival includes an artist's village, Ramayana Mela, lecture series, concerts, video festival, Kathakali, poets' meet and story writers' meet.

    The 111-day event would officially come to a close on January 10, 2011, with a stage show 'Dwayam' directed by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, he added.
