UDF wins first tribal grama panchayat

Thiruvananthapuram : Edamalakudy, the first tribal grama panchayat in Kerala, has come under the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) which gained absolute majority, clinching eight, out of the total 13 wards in the elections held to the local bodies. The new grama panchayat, carved out of Munnar grama panchayat in the delimitation process, has 1,412 voters in 13 wards, spreading over 656 houses of 28 ''kudies'' (settlements) with the President post reserved for women.

The ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front had high expectations from this village as they had always worked for their welfare. But they suffered a setback with the tribals rejecting the Left in the first-ever election after the grama panchayat was formed.

Nooradikudy has the highest number of 302 voters.

The other settlements in the hamlet are Parappayarkudy 216, Nenmanalkudy 125, Mulakutharakudy 157, Sheddukudy 179, Thenparakudy 136 and Ambalakudy 202.
