Kochi :The Kerala Bar Council's decision to ban former bureacrat turned politician Alphons Kannanthanam, for practicising as advocate for six months alleging professional misconduct, has been stayed by the state high court.
The stay order was imposed by Justice P N Ravindran while admitting a petition by Kannanthanam, MLA, challenging the
ban. The court held that it was prima facie satisfied that the bar council's decision cannot be sustained.
The Bar Council's disciplinary committee in a suo motu proceeding after finding that Kannanthanam had indulged in
business activities apart from being an advocate, had decided to suspend his practise.
Kannanthanam, who contested as LDF backed independent and won, also runs an academy for career excellence.
The council found that he had applied and obtained a trade mark for the academy when he was on the roll of the bar
council without suspending the practise or with permission of the bar council, which was illegal.
It was also found that he received rs 25,000 a month and 15 per cent of the totla annual income from the academy.PTI
