New Delhi: The leaked tapes of Nira Radia, a woman of formidable networking and PR skills, who is the controversial leading lady in the spectrum scam, unearthed the functioning style of power groups in Delhi. The phone lines of the head of Vaishnavi Communication, Nira Radia, were twice placed under surveillance by the Income Tax Department (based on a tip-off by the Central Board of Direct Taxes) for a few months in 2008 and 2009. These tapes show the corruption nexus between top journalists and political parties and corporate lobbyists.
After getting authorization from the Home Ministry, the Indian Income Tax department had tapped Radia's phone lines for 300 days in 2008-2009, as part of their investigations into possible money laundering, restricted financial practices and tax evasion. These phone recordings led to the unveiling of the 2G spectrum scam of a record $40 billion involving former Telecommunications and IT Minister A. Raja and other politicians, corporate and industrialists, government officials, middlemen and media persons, which subsequently led to his resignation from his post.
The phone tapes revealed that corporate lobbyists have hand in deciding even the union ministers. It makes it clear that the middlemen min corporate sector plays crucial role in making policing decision in the important sectors. Radia spoke to prominent figures like Barkha Dutt, Group editor, English news, NDTV, Vir Sanghvi, HT advisory editorial director, Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP and Ranjan Bhattacharya husband of former prime minister Vajpayee's step daughter . The tapes provided evidence that Ranjan who is from BJP had hand in the formation of UPA government. The tapes which were handed over to CBI included the Nira's conversations with AICC general secretary Ahammad Patel, Karunanidhi, Gulam Nabi Azad, Azhagiri, Stalin, Dayanithi Maran, TR Balu, Karunanidhi's second wife Dayaluammal and third wife Rajathi Ammal and Amar Singh.
