Terrorists concentrating activities in Adivasi colonies: Balan

Kochi : Kerala Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities Minister A K Balan today hinted that terror outfits and other anti-social elements were trying to concentrate their activities in the Adivasi colonies in the state. Replying to questions after a public function here, he said it was suspected that terrorists and political and communal outfits were gripping their holds in the Adivasi colonies and using the Adivasis for their benefits in the state.

Stating that the government could not take any action against conversion of Adivasis to other religions, he, however, said ''forceful conversion is not a good tendency.'' Becasue of conversion and mortality among them, the number of Adivasis were coming down heavily in the state and many of the Adivasi tribals were facing extinction on the earth, he added.

Earlier, inaugurating a UGC-funded research development programme on social and economic condition of Adivasis in the state, he said out of the 36 tribal sects in the state, five of them were facing elimination on the earth.

Stressing the need for uplifting the tribals, both economically and socially, he said he was initiating various programmes and distributing land to the landless tribals.

He said because of their traditional lifestyle and food, many of the tribals were suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia, a disease found among only in tribal settlements and the mortality rate among them were very high.

Stating that the total poplulation of the Scheduled Tribes in the state was 3.5 lakh, which was two per cent of the state's total population, he said the government had recently included 196 Aranadan and 354 Chola Naikkan triabls into the category of SC.

Former state minister and Congress MLA Domanic Presentation in his presidential address said instead of giving financial assistance to the tribals, they should be given proper education and source of permanent income.
