Thiruvananthapuram: A report by the Union Agricultural ministry revealed that the presence of hazardous pesticides was found in the wheat, cardamom and cauliflower which are being distributed in Kerala. In the nationwide examination conducted by Indian Agricultural Research Institute found out harmful chemicals in the samples collected from Kerala, which adversely affect brain and liver.
The samples were tested in 20 organizations across the nation including at theVellayani agricultural college. The test found out the presence of pesticide `phorate' in the ration wheat supplied in Kerala, which is produced in Punjab. The Central Food Security Act bans the presence of `phorate' in wheat. The study revealed the presence of 0.054% phorate in one kg wheat.
The presence of `Quinalphose' was found out in cardamom which is produced is Idukki. The high presence of `Chlorpyrifos' was found in the cauliflower which is cultivated in Ootty and distributed in Kerala. These three pesticides are highly harmful as it will affect brain and liver if it reaches human body. The presences of pesticide were also found in the grapes produced in Nasik, Apple from Sonipat, Himachal Pradesh and Orange from America.
