Thiruvananthapuram : The 15th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) set in motion in a glittering way in the presence of world known film makers and film personalities among others.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, inaugurated the festival, which showcases more than 200 films from across the globe and from the country. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the IFFK has succeeded in attracting attention of the international film world.
The Chief Minister also conferred Lifetime Achievement Award on German Filmmaker Werner Herzog. Jnanpith Winner and Malapayalam Poet and Lyricist O N V Kurup was also honoured.
Kerala Cultural Minister M A Baby, Cuba Ambassador to India Miguel Angel Ramirez, Festival Director K R Mohanan were present among others.
Culture Minister Baby presented a memento to yesteryear legend Waheeda Rehman, who was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, German Filmmaker Werner Herzog said ''It is an amazing moment for me. I see great appreciation of the films here. ''Then looking at the selection of films, I see that the entire world is present here. It is a great honour for me recieve the Lifetime Achievement Award.'' A dance drama based on O N V's poem Amma, staged by Kalamandalam, enthralled the audience.
The festival will showcase 16 sections, including the competition section' that will have 14 films from Asia, Africa and Latin America vying for the prestigious Suvarna Chakoram award.
Films of German Film Maker Fassbinder and Indian Director T V Chandran are included in the retrospective section. The contemporary masters section will feature films of Werner Herzog, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Olivier Assayas and Maria Novaro.
Another attraction of the festival is the Bicentennial Films, which is included for commemorating 200 years of Latin American Independence. The Flamenco section features films from Spain, Cameron, Tanzania, Indonesia and Malayasia. The varied perspectives of Africa are featured in 12 films in the 'Forget Africa' category.
Another unique feature of this fest is ''Japanese Manga'', which features 12 cartoon films. Eight masterpieces also included in another section from Japan -- Japanese classic.
The Spirit of Independence category has films about the grievances and dilemmas of the African-Americans. Five films from Italy France, Czechoslovakia, the US and Germany are included in the Women Films section.
The festival also pays tribute to Actor and Film Maker Sotigui Kouyate, showcasing his films.
In the Malayalam Tribute Section, films of Mankada Ravivarma, Adoor Pankajam, M G Radhakrishnan, Venu Nagavalli, Kochin Haneefa, Gireesh Puthencherri, Srinath and Aziz are included.
The Bi-centennial section will feature films of renowned filmmakers Luis Bunnel, Andres Wood, Julio Bracho among others.
The festival also pays homage to Malayalam Filmmakers, screening their films. Director and Actor Venu Nagavally, Lyricist Girish Puthenchery, Music Director M G Radhakrishnan, Actors Cochin Haneefa, Sreenath, Azeez, Adoor Pankajam and Cinematographer Mankada Ravivarma are those to whom will be paid homage.
