Kochi: The Karshaka Union (M), a wing of the Kerala Congress (M), will organise a dharna in front of the Regional Office of Reserve Bank of India here on January 14, protesting the adamant stand of nationalised banks in disbursing educational loan to eligible students in professional colleges.
Talking to reporters here, Kerala Congress (M) State General Secretary P C Joseph and Karshaka Union State President Mathew Stephen alleged many of the nationalised banks in the state were not ready to provide educational loans over Rs 2.5 lakh, though the Reserve Bank had given necessary instruction to release Rs 4.5 lakh without collateral security.
However, it was a common attitude of bank officials to collect the relevant documents, including land deeds from parents, and threatening them by issuing notice well ahead of the date for repayment of loans, they charged.
They also demanded the present scheme of waiving interest for the educational loans from 2009, be made applicable to all those who had availed loans since 2003.
They further suggested the Reserve Bank to monitor whether the nationalised banks distributed educational loans to the eligible candidates in time.
Kerala Congress (M) Chairman and former minister K M Mani would inaugurate the dharna, they added.
