Kochi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday stated that the state government has the responsibility to give compensation to the victims of endosulfan. NHRC chairman justice K G Balakrishnan told `Mathurbhumi' that the meeting of NHRC slated to be held next week would officially announce its decision. NHRC has been viewing the plight of thousands of people affected by endosulfan as a gross violation of human rights.
NHRC also decided to form a core committee including Dr M S Swaminathan to conduct a scientific study on endosulfan. In future the recommendations by this committee would be used by other commissions for further actions. The commission has begun first level discussions on the threats posed by pesticide. As the issue is of serious importance the commission would analyze it deeply in the next meeting. The commission is of the opinion that for years the authorities have taken up the issue lightly. As per the rules of the commission, it is a civil obligation to give compensation to victims which is the responsiblity of the state government.
The Commission would also give direction to rehabilitation centres for the victims. The central government on Wednesday took a decision to form a special committee to study the health problems faced by the victims. The NHRC also stated that the list of victims given by the state government is inaccurate. The commission itself would take initiative for a complete list. The Commission is also planning to give order for a detailed medical camp.
