Steps to check the attack of wild elephants

Thiruvananthapuram : In view of the increase in the number of persons killed due to attack of wild elephants on human settlements in Nilambur and Malabar forest regions, Kerala government has set up a series of solar fenancing and
put up trenches to check the elephant menace. More than 50 km lenth solar fenancing with a total cost of Rs.42.36 lakhs and six trenches with an outlay of Rs.37
crores were constructed in the forest borders in the region.

This was stated by State Food Minister C Divakaran on behalf of State Forest Minister Binoy Viswam in the assembly to a
calling attention, of Arayadan Muhammed (cong). In the past four years, 15 persons had been killed in the region by wild elephants, Divakaran said.

Government would also cosider the demand of Muhammed to empower the officials with authority to carry out mock firing
to scare away the elephants. Muhammed said that for self-defenence there was nothing wrong even to 'hunt' the animal. But, to save the human life and properties, instructions should be given to forest officials atleast to carry out mock firing. PTI
