Noted human rights activist and lawyer K G Kannabiran, who filed many cases against the police over alleged fake encounters with Maoists, died in Hyderabad on Thursday after protracted illness. He was 82.

Kannabiran, who hailed from Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, founded the People's Union of Civil Liberties in 1994 and was also president of the Andhra Pradesh Civil Rights Committee for 15 years. Kannabiran, who was bed-ridden for the last six months, breathed his last at his house at Maredpalli in Hyderabad. He is survived by wife, a son and two daughters, according to family sources.
The last rites of Kannabiran were performed in Maredpalli locality on Thursday night, revolutionary writer Varavara Rao said.
