Kannur :Congress and CPI(M) are locking horns over the question whether a busy junction in Kannur town to be named after Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi or Indian Communist icon A K Gopalan, who hailed from the area.
The Congress-controlled town administration yesterday obtained a stay from the Kerala High Court against a recent
government order to name the junction after A K Gopalan, based on a resolution adopted by the Left-dominated District chayat.
The sopt in the heart of the town had been known as 'Caltex Junction' for decades before the District Panchayat adopted
the resolution to rename it after Gopalan and recommended it to the government.
The district panchayat had acted on the ground that the legendary Communist leader, popularly known as AKG, hailed
from Peralassery near here and Kannur town was the centre of his activity for long.
The Congress-ruled municipality, however, countered the move by passing a resolution to name the spot as 'Gandhi Square'.
Local Congress leaders accused the CPI-M of acting with political motives on the strength of their majority in the
district panchayat and that it amounted to infringement on the rights and privileges of the town council.
The stay on the district panchayat was given by the High Court on a petition filed by the Municipal Council citing
the sections in the Municipal Act to buttress its claim. PTI
