Verbal war on TV channels pays way for legal battles

Kochi: The verbal war on TV channels are changing track now and may become a legal battle. The so-called battle is between the 96-year old veteran in law V R Krishna Iyer and noted senior advocate V Ramkumar. The background of the whole story are the allegations raised against former CJI K G Balakrishnan. The High court senior advocate V Ramkumar is of the strong opinion that justice V R Krishna Iyer had insulted him personally. Iyer had stated that Adv Ramkumar had spoken in favour of KGB, also linking Ramkumar's name in another corruption. Adv Ramkumar said that as these allegations are baseless, he has decided to send legal notice seeking Rs 1 crore as compensation from Iyer, through adv Muhammad Riyas.

Rejecting outright the allegation of Justice V Ramkumar against him, Veteran Jurist and former Supreme Court Judge V R Krishna Iyer said that everyone have the freedom to express their views and level any allegations against anybody.

Talking to reporters here, he, however, said ''such statements from him are painful to me as I know him very well.'' Regarding the allegation by Justice Ramkumar that Justice Krishna Iyer had recommended somebody from Bihar to the Supreme Court, he said ''it is a ''blatant lie'' and I have not recommended anybody from Bihar or elsewhere to the Supreme Court.

''On the contrary, I have criticised the collegium of which Justice Balakrishan was the Chairman.'' Stating that he had not made any telephone calls to anybody for any special recommendations, the former Judge said that he used to help all those who required his help and some people got benefit and some did not.

''If anybody wanted to know the truth and facts of call, they can collect my call records to cross check.

Justice Iyer also said all the other allegations, including that he was leading a luxurious life wearing spectacles costing Rs two lakh, were baseless and contradictory to truth.
