    IUML favours development-oriented poll manifesto

    Kozhikode : The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a partner in the Congress-led Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), today urged the latter to place emphasis on a development-oriented manifesto for the coming Assembly elections in the state. Briefing newspersons after a day-long council meeting of the party, state general secretary P K Kunhalikutty said it had stressed on a pro-active, pro-people and development-oriented manifesto for the 2011 poll.

    He said the party, which was already in the election mode, had decided to set up various committees to have close contact with the various sections, including intellectuals, media and others.

    The committees would be functioning by Mohammed Koya International Foundation at Thiruvananthapuram.

    On one man one post norm, he said, it had already implemented the party decision at district level and the rest maintaining twin posts would follow suit before the Assembly poll.

    Stating the decision was applicable to him as well, he said it was taken to enable elected members to work more effectively.

    On the ongoing debate on genetically modified crops, he said the government should take an appropriate decision while considering all aspects as it was not yet scientifically proved beneficial.

    Besdies, many of the GM seeds are not suitable to Indian conditions, he said adding a policy had to be formulated after discussions with all concerned on the issue.
