Thrissur: The government is all set to play a key role in palliative clinics where so far service organizations had a major role. The project `Pariraksha' began work in all districts, in association with LSG's Kudumbasree, NRHM and government hospitals. With such a move, Kerala has become the first state in Asia formulating a policy for palliative care. Through the project, volunteers would be able to provide some relief to non-curable diseases and include those under the welfare programmes of the government.
The volunteers are getting ready to visit houses at panchayat level. For this an axilliary nurse would be appointed in each panchayats. Full time service would be available in primary health centers. In-patient sections should be started in government hospitals. The cost of medicine for a patient would be included in the annual project of LSGs.
If more money is needed they can use maintenance grant. The LSGs can include the patients for various pension programmes and can also recommend houses and water beds for them.
NRHM is the facilitating agency for the project. They have the responsibility of employees' salary and training. In Thrissur district NRHM spent Rs 60 lakh and various LSGs also spent Rs 80 lakh.
