KC Venugopal to become Union Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress leader K.C. Venugopal M.P is likely to be sworn in as Minister of State on Friday as part of the proposed Cabinet reshuffle to be carried out by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. According to top Congress sources, Venugopal is likely to get Railways, which is at present being handled by E Ahamed as Minister of State. Ahamed will be shifted to External Affairs Ministry, where he was Minister of State in the first term of the UPA government.

Venugopal represents the Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency. His appointment is being viewed as an attempt to appease the NSS leadership which was not happy with the induction of Shashi Tharoor as Minister of State. Tharoor, later, resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs following the Indian Premier League fiasco.

Congress leadership in the State considers railway development a key area for Kerala and would be pushing for this portfolio for Venugopal, according to KPCC sources
