    Centre will consider providing rail link to Kannur Airport: Ahamed

    Kozhikode : The Centre will consider providing rail link to the proposed airport in the neighbouring Kannur and the National Institute for Research and Development in Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) at Chaliyam in this district, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said today. Speaking at a function to flag off Thiruvanthapuram Central- Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi Express, he said a proposal for the new rail links had already been submitted to the government.

    Mr Ahamed, who was shifted to MEA in the Cabinet reshuffle yesterday, said he was able to fulfil many promises in his capacity as Minister of State for Railways as far as development of the railways in the region was concerned.

    Stating doubling of Shornur-Mangalore railway tack was almost over, he said work for some remaining patch works would be completed in two/three months.

    Even after shifting to MEA he would continue his work for development of railways in the state, Mr Ahamed said.

    The new train via Kottayam would commence service from Thiruvanthapuram and Kozhikode on January 21 and 22 respectively.

    The high speed train with stoppages at Shornur, Thrissur, Ernakulam Town, Kottayam, Chengannur, Kayamkulam and Kollam, would have three air-conditioned chair car coaches and 13 second class chair car coaches.

    The five-day train in Kozhikode-Thiruvanhtapuram sector, except on Wednesays and Sundays, would leave Kozhikode at 0615 hrs to reach the state capital at 1345 hrs.

    In its return leg, also on five days a week, except on Tuesdays and Saturdays, it would depart Thiruvanthapuram at 1420 hrs to reach here at 2205 hrs.

    Senior Congress leader M K Raghavan, MP, A Pradeep Kumar, MLA, P M A Salam, MLA, Kozhikode Mayor A K Premajam, District Panchayat President Kanathil Jameela, Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan and Divisional Railway Manager S K Raina, were among those present.
