    Pondiram gets J Swaminathan Award

    Kochi : Pandiram Mandavi, Varanatt Sankaranarayana Kurup and Parapparakutty have been choosen for the first J Swaminathan Award, instituted by the Kerala Lalithakala Akadami for tribal and folk arts. Informing this at a news conference here today, Akademi Secretary Satyapal said the Akademi had also selected Sankarlal Jara and Sundaribhai Rajwar for the Jangan Singh Shyaam and Sonabhai Rajwar Awards respectively.

    The award carries a cash price of Rs one lakh each, certificates, ponnada and citation. The awards would be given on Feburay 13, he said.

    Pandiram Mandavi, a native of Gadbengal in Chathisgarh, belongs to Muravi. He has visited many foreign countries and exhibited his works, while Prappakarikuutty and Varanatt Sankaranarayana Kurup were from Kasragod and Thirissur districts respectively in Kerala.

    Sankarlal Dhara, a native of Ekthal in Chattisgarh and Orissa border, is a well known artist in bell metal, while Sundaribhai, hailing from Pushpaputra village in Chattisgarh, is famous for her works in various metals, he added.

    This was for the first time, the Akadami was honoring tribal art and folk artists in the state and the awards were given in the name of late artist J Swaminathan (three awards), and one each award in the name Jangan Singh Shyaam and Sonnabhai Rajwar, he added.
