BJP wants the parliament to function smoothly: Venkaiah Naidu

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday demanded that the United Progressive Alliance government make the names of those who had stashed away black money in Swiss bank and other foreign banks public. Mr. Naidu reiterated the party's demand for the Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum scam, and added that the government should agree to a JPC probe so that Parliament can function effectively.

“We want the parliament to function smoothly. But we do not want to give up the demand for JPC,” Mr. Naidu said.

    ‘Major public issue'
The senior BJP leader alleged that corruption had assumed an alarming proportion under the UPA-II rule and has become a major public issue. He alleged the UPA government was not doing anything to bring back the black money stashed away in foreign banks. He warned the UPA government that if it was not able to read the writing on the wall, then protests against corruption was going to take the form of a mass agitation across the country.

Mr. Naidu claimed that people's anger against massive corruption had reached such a stage that if elections were held now, the Congress party would be completely wiped out. “We are not asking for the resignation of the Prime Minister. However, he should make public the names of those having black money in foreign banks and the government should agree to a JPC probe.”

He demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation , the Central Vigilance Commission and the Governor, must be freed from political interference and made accountable only to the parliament. Appointment Governors must be made on the basis of recommendations of the Sarkaria Commission.

    Demands fast track courts
The BJP also wanted a time frame to be given to the investigation agency so that probes could be completed in the stipulated time. He also demanded appointment of fast track courts to deal with the corruption cases.

Mr. Naidu alleged that the CBI had lost its credibility and that was why it was nick-named “Congress Bureau of Investigation.” He also demanded that the discretionary quota of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Ministers in the States, Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Sssemblies should be done away with.

Asked to comment on Governor H.S. Bhardwaj sanctioning the prosecution of the Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Mr. Naidu said that law would take its own course.
