Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday termed “disturbing” the comments of a United States diplomat who said that the ankle monitors tagged on some Indian students in California were “hip and happening.”
Seeking an apology from the diplomat, Mr. Sibal said: “The comments of the U.S. official are disturbing. This lady should apologise in all fairness.”
He was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the annual general meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Society.
Asked about the steps being taken by his Ministry in the matter, Mr. Sibal said the External Affairs Ministry was looking into it.
Juliet Wur, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad, had on Tuesday called the radio-tagging of Indian students at Tri-Valley University in California “hip and happening” and said that the only other option they had was to sit in prison. She said that many U.S. movie stars and celebrities chose radio-tagging over prison.
Ms. Wur later expressed regret after the Indian government protested.
