Budget session will run smoothly: Meira Kumar

The “very positive and very cordial” meetings that she had with the BJP and Congress leadership was the basis for her optimism that the Budget session of the Lok Sabha will run smoothly, Speaker Meira Kumar said here on Sunday.

She said that she has been talking to political parties because she was “determined” to have a session. “Yes, I have been talking…My role is that of a facilitator. I put them together and let them work it out. So I called BJP leadership and I called Congress leadership. The meeting was very positive and very cordial…There was not a single comment that was negative. This helped me become more positive,” she said.

Asked to elaborate on her comments made at the inaugural of the third Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Asia Regional Conference on Saturday, she said that she had held “three rounds of meetings” with the major political parties; had met all the 13 single party members and also all the nine independents in a bid to ensure that the House transacted business when it met later this month to discuss the General Budget. “Yes, I am very optimistic. I think this session is going to run smoothly. I am even hopeful that all the question hour will happen,” she said.

Kapilvastu relics to be brought to Sri Lanka

The sacred Kapilvastu relics will be sent to Sri Lanka as part of the plans to observe the 2600th anniversary of the Enlightenment of Lord Buddha (Sambuddhatva Jayanti). This follows a request that had been made personally to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by the President of Sri Lanka.

Among other activities, India is also organizing an international conference on Buddhism in Kandy in March 2011 and commissioning an Indian gallery, including a 16-feet high statue of Lord Buddha, for the International Buddhist Museum in Kandy.

The Kapilvastu relics had last travelled out of India in the late seventies.

These were among the topics of discussion between Ms.Meira Kumar and President Rajapaksa, when she met him at his Temple Trees residence on Saturday.

The President welcomed the initiatives of the Indian Government and also referred to the various developmental activities being undertaken by India in Sri Lanka such as the housing project and the rehabilitation of the railway network in the north. It was also agreed that the two sides would promote parliamentary exchanges, especially between young parliamentarians.

The Speaker also said that she looked forward to the visit to India in the near future of a Sri Lankan parliamentary delegation led by Sri Lankan Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.

Earlier, following the inaugural session, Ms. Kumar paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, D.M. Jayaratne. She noted the various areas of cooperation between India and Sri Lanka and the progress achieved on agreements that had been reached during high level bilateral visits.
