2 Netai firing case accused arrested

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) claims to have arrested two of the six persons accused of killing nine villagers in the January 7 firing incident at Netai in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district.

The arrests came within 48 hours of the CID releasing photographs of the accused and announcing a Rs. 50,000-cash reward for providing information on the whereabouts of each of them.

“Ashwini Chalak and Abani Singh were arrested from Midnapore town on Monday based on source information. They will be produced in court on Tuesday,” Inspector-General Nirajnayan Pandey told The Hindu here.

The others — the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Lalgarh committee secretary Joydeb Giri, local CPI(M) leaders Fullora Mondal and Tapan Dey, and Rathin Dandapat from whose house bullets were fired allegedly by CPI(M) ‘harmads' — were still at large.
