For the first time in nine years of its domination in Manipur politics, the ruling Congress suffered a serious setback when it was defeated in Monday's Assembly by-election in Konthoujam. Its candidate S. Ranjan lost to the Trinamool Congress' K. Sarat by 656 votes.
The results of the election, necessitated by the death of Speaker S. Budhichandra, father of Mr. Ranjan, were declared on Thursday.
Though the Congress and the Trinamool are partners at the Centre, both parties fielded their candidates. There was also an independent in the fray. The Trinamool was supported by the Opposition parties.
