Gogoi urges Manmohan to set up Internet gateway in Guwahati

The Assam government on Friday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to extend connectivity from Bangladesh's Cox Bazar to Guwahati by setting up an Internet gateway here.

The State Cabinet, during its meeting with Dr. Singh at the Raj Bhavan here, submitted a memorandum stating that frequent disruptions in IT connectivity had been deterring companies from investing in the State.

Currently Mumbai and Chennai International Gateways are linked to Assam through the narrow Siliguri corridor. This leads to frequent disruptions in Assam and other north-eastern States. The Cox Bazar is just 480 km from Guwahati and has a SEA-ME-WE 4 undersea cable landing station, according to the memorandum.

The State also impressed upon Dr. Singh the need to set up a hub of the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) in Guwahati to strengthen Internet penetration.

The Prime Minister, who arrived here on two-day visit to the State, reviewed the progress of some of the flagship programmes with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and members of his Cabinet and senior officials.

The State Cabinet also pushed for a knowledge-based project, “Assessing and Analysing the integrated Hydrologic-Hydraulic System Dynamics of the Brahmaputra River Basin of North East India,” for funding under Indo-German cooperation to develop a sustainable, integrated river management programme to mitigate erosion and flood menace in Assam.

Dr. Singh was informed that the project had already been submitted to the Water Resources Ministry in June 2010 but was yet to be finalised.

The project will be the continuation of the work done on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra under a scheme, Brahmatwinn, by the IIT-Roorkee and the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, in Germany, so that reliable data can be generated for simulation of flood protection projects in Assam.

Dr. Singh, who reviewed the implementation of Central schemes, said the achievements of Assam were encouraging, said an official release.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the problems of flood and erosion Assam was facing every year. Mr. Gogoi sought a comprehensive, long-term “master plan” for flood and erosion management. Dr. Singh assured the State government that the Centre would take up “this serious issue” at the earliest, the release said.
