Amid wanton slaughtering by poachers, there are good tidings of people rescuing animals and handing them over to the Forest Department (wildlife wing) in Manipur.
On Sunday, A. Chingthangkhomba of the Tiger camp village rescued a barking deer, which was later entrusted to officials of the Manipur Zoological Garden. It was reported that the stag, attacked by poachers in the nearby mountains, sustained injuries and took shelter in the house of the villager.
In another incident, L. Chandrasekhar, a contractor, bought a fawn for Rs. 1,500 from poachers at Awang in Tamenglong district. They had slaughtered a deer for selling venison and sold its fawn in the market. Chandrasekhar bottle-fed the young deer for four months, after which he handed it over to the Manipur Zoological Garden.
