Barasat eve-teasing case: prime accused nabbed

The prime accused in the Barasat eve-teasing incident, which led to the death of a teenager, had been arrested, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told reporters at the State Secretariat.

Asked why two others involved in the incident were not yet nabbed, he said: “The prime accused has been arrested; the rest will also be booked. Efforts are on.”

Around the midnight of February 14, Rajib Das, brother of 20-year-old Rinku Das, was killed by the three inebriated youths while trying to ward off their advances towards his sister, when he was escorting her back home from work.

Mr. Bhattacharjee had rushed to console the family and assured them all help.

The government has paid Rs. 2 lakh as compensation to the family and offered a Group D job in the soil testing department of the Panchayat Office in Barasat to Gayatri, Rinku's mother.

The case created a furore not merely because a youth lost his life trying to protect his sister's honour, but also because Rinku's efforts to draw help from armed sentries protecting government official's bungalow close-by drew a blank.

    A sentry has been suspended.
