25 lakh cardholders to get rice at Rs 2
Thiruvananthapuram: With the government taking a decision to allot rice for Rs 2 a kg to the entire ration card holders, 25 lakh more card holders would be benefitted. Finance minister Dr M Thomas Isaac said that the state would incur an extra burden of Rs 27 crore. From last year onwards 35 lakh families were given rice for Rs 2 a kg. This year the number of families have gone up to 40 lakh. Presently the government is giving a subsidy of Rs 22 crore for providing rice at Rs 2. The central government is giving rice for Rs 8.10 per kilo for APL families and Rs 5.65 for BPL families. The government is giving this ration for Rs 2 a kg after giving subsidy.
