The historic NRI votes, which are being implemented for the first time and which is turning out to be crucial in the polls, are having only a few takers. There was cold response to the new step from the NRIs. When the last date for NRIs to add their names in the voters list ended, only 8000 NRI voters were registered. Among them, how many would exercise their franchise needs to be seen. The confusion over the system of registering names in the voters list during the initial days had caused the decline in numbers. At first the direction was that the application must be attested by the Indian Ambassador's office in the respective countries where the NRIs are working. But later it was changed and the applicants can self-attest the application. Some of the applications were also not considered on various grounds.
In Malappuram district there are more than 4.5 lakh NRIs and only 1691 registered their names. In Kozhikode only 2685 have registered. Thiruvananthapuram 226, Kollam 140, Pathanamthitta 296, Kottayam 111, Alappuzha 166, Ernakulam 32, Idukki 32, Thrissur 385, Palakkad 70, Wayanad 97, Kannur 1677 and in Kasargod 491.
