Former ICS officer PC Mathew passes away

Chennai: P C Mathew, one of the last surviving Malayalee members of the Indian Civil Service, passed away in Chennai on Monday. He belongs to the 1936 ICS batch. He is the son of Chandipillai and Eliamma from Thiruvalla. There might not be another person who had closely watched the history of India and Tamil Nadu to such an extent. PC Mathew was with Nehru, Rajagopalachari, Kamaraj and Indira Gandhi during one of the crucial phases of history. He retired as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development Department in 1973. During this time he set up the Madras School of Social Work. When the Pallavan Transport Corporation was started with 30 buses, Rajagopachari appointed Mathew as its head. He began his service with Madras Government from 1936. He was first appointed in Thalassery and Palakkad.

His body was laid to rest at the Kilpauk cemetery in Chennai.
