Even as the Noida administration prepares for a probe into the case of Sonali and her deceased sister Anuradha, who locked themselves in their house for six months, their brother Vipin Behl has claimed that the two never showed any signs of psychological disturbance. Meanwhile, doctors have stated that Sonali is in a stable condition.
The sisters — who had remained unmarried by choice — had always been close to each other. With an age difference of three years between them, Sonali had opted for the same school and college that her sister went to.
“Both of them studied at the same elementary school in Agra, and after moving to Delhi, went to Kendriya Vidyalaya in Gol Market,” Vipin Behl, an employee of American Express, told Newsline. Children of a retired colonel in the army, Vipin was the only sibling who studied at the Army Public School in the Capital. While Vipin chose to become an engineer, both the sisters went to Daulat Ram College of Delhi University and graduated in history.
“Anuradha had frequented hospitals in her childhood as she was born with a problem called haemangioma — an abnormal growth in cells lining the blood vessels, which causes facial disfiguration. She was repeatedly operated for this condition,” he said.
While Anuradha quit her job with Thapar Hydro Consultants at Vasant Vihar in 1996, Sonali resigned from Golden Strands in 2008. Vipin said they never consulted him before taking the decisions. However, he believes the sisters did not consciously decide to starve themselves.
“When I asked Sonali why they had stopped eating, she said it was because the grocery boy had stopped delivering. She said since their phone connection had been cut off since February, they could not call him,” said Vipin.
“Anuradha loved to read books, but Sonali was not as well read. They were very close, and Vipin was the apple of their eye,” a relative said.
According to Vipin, differences arose between them after he decided to marry a girl of his choice. “Though my sisters participated and planned my wedding, they were feeling insecure as my parents had left the family property in my name. When I left the house in August 2007, I transferred it to convince them their fears were baseless, but it did not work,” said Vipin.
Sonali’s doctors said that though her condition is stable, her blood pressure continues to be erratic. “Her blood pressure has been fluctuating since Wednesday afternoon,” Kailash Hospital spokesperson V B Joshi said, adding, “Her body is responding to medicines. She is still in the ICU.”
SSP S N Singh, meanwhile, had a meeting with social activist Usha Thakur on Thursday and said an FIR needs to be lodged in the case.
