3 held for killing woman over property

Three youths were arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly woman, who did not have a legal heir, to grab her property, police said on Thursday.

Identifying the victim as Bimla Devi (65), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) A K Ojha said that the murder was allegedly plotted by her tenant, electrician Mukesh Rai (20) and his three friends. Though Rai and his two friends — Niraj Tyagi (30) and Kishore Kumar (25) — have been arrested, another youth, Saurav, is absconding.

“Rai found that she was living alone, and moved into her house as a tenant. He earned her trust. On November last year, he and his friends strangled her,” Ojha said.

The arrests followed investigations into a complaint by a housing society member about Devi going missing from her house in Palam Colony. “They informed us that Mukesh was also untraceable. The society member also told us that some people had moved into the woman’s house, claiming that they had bought it. We became suspicious of Rai as he had gone missing,” Ojha said.

Police teams were sent to Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal and different parts of Delhi in search of Mukesh. He was finally apprehended from New Delhi Railway Station on a tip-off recently.

Rai was earlier living in an adjacent house, and when he discovered that Devi was living alone, he shifted into her residence. “It was with the motive of getting her property transferred in his name. He discussed his plan with Kishore, who runs a grocery shop in the locality. Kishore introduced Mukesh to another shopkeeper, Neeraj, who took him to Saurav, a bank loan agent,” Ojha said.

Saurav asked Mukesh to obtain the original documents pertaining to Bimla’s property. “He allegedly promised Mukesh that he would get these documents transferred in his name. Mukesh stole the documents from her house, then handed them over to Saurav. On November 16, 2010, they brought a woman resembling Devi to a sub-registrar’s office and got the property transferred in Mukesh’s name. Nine days later, the gang murdered Devi,” Ojha said, adding that they stuffed the body in a plastic bag and dumped it in Bilaspur, Gurgaon.
