Two die in E-way accident near Khopoli

Two youths from Pune were killed on Thursday morning after the jeep they were travelling in was crushed between a truck and a luxury bus near Khopoli on Pune-Mumbai Expressway about 60 km from Pune. Seven other vehicles also got damaged in the accident after they rammed into one another as they were behind the truck. After the accident, expressway traffic had to be diverted to old Pune-Mumbai highway.

The deceased passengers of the jeep have been identified as Prathamesh Rajendra Salunkhe (25) and Tulsidas Borhade (27) of Dhanakawadi. L B Bhosale, sub-inspector with Borghat division of State Highway Police (SHP), said, “At 8.45 am, 50-60 vehicles were stranded due to a minor accident in which a truck had turned turtle at Dhekulwadi in Borghat near Khopoli. The spot where the accident took place has a slope just before it as one travels from Pune to Mumbai. Around 9 am, a speeding truck coming from Pune rammed into the jeep which was standing at the tail end of the line of the vehicles. The truck was in such high speed that it completely crushed the jeep killing the two persons and then rammed into the luxury bus.” Police said the driver of the truck could have lost his control on the slope.

As the truck came to a sudden halt, seven other vehicles - a Scorpio jeep, three luxury buses, a car and two trucks - rammed into one other. One of the passengers in the Scorpio jeep sustained minor injuries as his head banged into the steering wheel. P N Kadam, a police naik attached with the Khopoli police station, said, “We are looking for the truck driver. We have been told by the villagers that he was taken to the hospital immediately after the accident.” He added, “Deceased Salunkhe works as a driver with the Hyundai showroom in Dhanakawadi and Borhade is a mechanic. Both of them were on their way to Mumbai for some work. Salunkhe was driving the jeep.” Their bodies were handed over to relatives on Thursday afternoon.

Kadam said, “The impact was huge and the jeep was crushed beyond recognition. The rear part of luxury bus was also damaged, fortunately none of the passengers wase injured.” Bhosale said, “Because of the accident there was a traffic jam on the Pune-Mumbai side. For about one-and-a-half hours we had diverted the traffic to the old highway. By 10.30 am, the flow on expressway was brought back to normalcy.”
