Yechury backs GNLF’s demand for Hill Council
After GNLF chief Subhash Ghising’s return to Darjeeling, senior CPM leaders have also started coming back to Darjeeling for holding public meetings. Significantly, after Ghising was evicted from the hills, no senior CPM leader including state minister Ashok Bhattacharya who is in charge of North Bengal could hold a public meeting in Darjeeling in the face of GJM resistance.
After being emboldened by GNLF’s return to the hills, Sitaram Yechury, CPM politburo member, today visited the hills and held a public meeting there. Yechury who was supposed to reach the meeting venue in Darjeeling around 1 pm, reached there at 5 pm as GJM supporters had blocked the road near Kurseong where GJM chief Bimal Gurung held a public meeting and for which thousands of GJM supporters had gathered at the spot.

Yechury, who had a permission to have a public meeting at the venue in Darjeeling till 5 pm, could reach there at 5 pm after the GJM supporters cleared the way for him. Yechury, in his 15-minute speech, blasted the Trinamool-Congress alliance. He said, “The Trinamool-Congress alliance is not only detrimental for the state, but also for the country. The Central government has never considered to reopen the NH- 55, the Darjeeling-Siliguri highway, which is closed now for almost a year.”
On Gorkhaland issue, Yechury said the Left Front wants the New Gorkha Hill Council bill to be passed in the Parliament.
“We support the GNLF demands and believe the New Gorkha Hill Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution is the only solution left for the hills. We will raise the issue in the Parliament,” he said.
