Over nine lakh persons belonging to Kol tribe will get special benefits after the decision taken by the state cabinet at its last meeting to constitute Kol Tribe Development Agency. Kol is the third largest tribe in the state after Bhil and Gond tribes.
According to the decision, apart from constitution of the Agency at the district level, Development Cells will also be set up in the offices of Assistant Commissioner or District Coordinator, Tribal Welfare in 10 districts dominated by Kol tribe. The cabinet has also given sanction for posts and administrative staff of the Agency. The Kol-dominated districts include Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol, Anuppur, Umaria, Katni, Jabalpur and Dindori.
The literacy rate among Kol tribe is equal to that of primitive tribes. As per the data of the last census, 35.9 per cent Kol tribe males and 22.9 per cent females were literate. Over 70 per cent people of the this tribe work as agricultural laborers.
