CM, LDF politicising endosulfan issue: Oommen Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram : Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy alleged that Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) were politicising the endosulfan issue and asked if they were ready for a non-political unity on the issue.Talking to newspersons here, he said Achuthanandan and the LDF should look at the endosulfan issue as a social and humanitarian issue and not politicise it.

Chandy also blamed the state government for not taking any action against the use of the killer pesticide even after the Union Government Order of 2006 that banned the use of endosulfan in the state. The pesticide was now being widely used in many places under the guise of other names, he added.

He asked if the Chief Minister had seen such a gazette notification of the Centre. The government should clarify what action had been taken after the gazette notification and how many cases had been registered in this connection. ''They should clarify what restricted them from taking action on the basis of the order,'' he said.

Stating that it was unfortunate that Achuthanandan had termed as ''devilish' Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that a decision to ban the killer pesticide nationwide would only be taken after further studies, he said Mr Singh had agreed to visit the endosulfan victims during his next visit to the state. The Prime Minister had only said the report of the Indian Council for Medical Research was needed as it involved the health aspects.

Chandy said he and KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala would meet Singh tomorrow and request him to impose a ban on the harmful pesticide endosulfan.

Pointing out that the Congress-led United Democratic Front's stance on Endosulfan had never changed, he said they were of the opinion that the killer pesticide should be banned.

He also asked what action had been taken against the Plantation Corporation, which had sprayed endosulfan in its plantations in Kasargode.

Chandy claimed the special tribunal for identifying Endosulfan victims had not yet been constituted.
