Hartal reflects twin stand of LDF on endosulfan: Chandy

Kozhikode: Accusing the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala of ''failure'' to implement a central ban on toxic pesticide endlosulfan, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy today alleged the LDF proposed hartal on April 29 in the state reflected the contradicting stand of the ruling dispensation on the issue.Talking to newspersons here he said the LDF government had failed to implement the ban on the toxic pesticide by the Centre at the instance of the previous Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in 2006.

Calling for a hartal now in protest against the pro-endosulfan stand taken by the Centre at the Stockholm Convention clearly showed the dual face of the ruling coalition in the State, he charged.

The move was politically motivated as the LDF government had failed to take steps to contain the aerial spraying of the pesticide during the last five years of their rule in the state, he alleged.

The state government was not even able to file a case and conduct a raid in the premises of the agencies supplying the toxic pesticide, he said.

While the UDF was in power the pesticide was used in Kasargod district alone. But during LDF rule it was also sprayed in Idukki and Palghat districts as well, he charged.

The state government had also failed to convice Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the need to ban pesticide when he visited the state last month, he alleged.

Would Chief Minister V S Achuthandan be able to convince CPI(M) ruled West Bengal and Tripura, which have not banned the presticide so far, to adopt a stand against endosulfan, he asked.
