Politics aside, India backs anti-graft drive

The Anna Hazare-led India Against Corruption (IAC) campaign may be at the receiving end from politicians but as far as the general public is concerned, it claims that it has received tremendous response. Thousands have volunteered for it.

The acid test was an SMS sent to lakhs of people, which read, “Do you want to volunteer for Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption (in support of a strong anti-corruption law)? If yes, please SMS back on this number.”

In Delhi, the SMS was sent to 3.50 lakh people last Saturday and of them, 50,000 replied confirming that they wanted to volunteer. A similar SMS was sent in Mumbai to over one lakh people where 10,000 responded positively.

An IAC statement said, “Reports from Bangalore and other cities are showing a burst of excitement as Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and others are readying to visit these cities for public consultations on the Jan Lokpal Bill.”

It claimed that numerous organisations, eminent people, ordinary citizens, professionals, businesses, and others are contacting IAC centres pledging their support. Calling it an overwhelming response, IAC said it was “totally unexpected”.

A public march will take place from Jantar Mantar to India Gate on May 1 in support of the Joint Drafting Committee.
