4-year-old girl run over by tractor in NW Delhi

NEW DELHI: A four-year-old girl was run over by a tractor outside her D-block residence in Aman Vihar on Saturday. The incident was reported at Buddh Bazaar Road in northwest Delhi around 8.30am. The girl was playing and the driver reportedly didn't see her.

"After mowing down Payal, the driver, Surender, panicked and abandoned the tractor laden with bricks and fled the spot. We rushed the child to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where she was declared brought dead. We have identified the driver and will arrest him soon. The tractor has been impounded and the owner contacted," said deputy commissioner of police (outer) Chhaya Sharma. A case of causing death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving has been registered in this regard.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the girl suddenly came in front of the vehicle and the driver had no time to react.

"It appears that the driver had just started after loading bricks on the tractor and couldn't apply brakes on time. He was coming from Aman Vihar towards Sultanpur when the incident occurred. We have sent a police team to find the whereabouts of the driver from the tractor owner. He was not speeding at the time of the incident as the colony roads are too narrow," said a senior police officer.

The father of the deceased, Rajkumar, owns a grocery store in the area.
