    Betting syndicate busted, 4 held

    NEW DELHI: Four people were arrested by the crime branch for their alleged involvement in a cricket betting syndicate which was operating during the match between Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders at Ferozshah Kotla stadium here on Thursday. The gang was operating from a telecom shop in the area of Pooth Kalan village in Delhi. Cash, mobile phones, a TV and notebooks have been recovered, said police. Counterfeit Indian currency with face value of Rs 1.69 lakh was also recovered.

    The arrested have been identified as Deepak Kaushik (25), Kapil Kaushik (23), Ankit Kaushik (19) and Parvesh (19). "They had received bets worth Rs 12 lakh till the time of the raid. So far, the total bets accepted by them in the IPL matches amount to Rs 2.5 crore," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Chand. Meanwhile, a fifth accused Ashok alias Ashu is absconding.

    Deepak, who sells mobile phone coupons, had been running a betting racket for the past two years. Of the six mobile phones recovered, one mobile phone was being used as dabba for obtaining rates and five were being used for receiving the bets.

    Counterfeit currency with face value of Rs 1,62,000 was recovered from Deepak Kaushik. The money was in the denominations of Rs 1000 and Rs 500. Meanwhile, counterfeit currency of face value Rs 7,000 was recovered from Kapil, in the denomination of Rs 1000. According to cops, the money had been given to Kapil by Deepak Kaushik for circulating in the market.

    "Further interrogation revealed that Deepak Kaushik mixed counterfeit Indian currency with genuine Indian currency for making payments to the punters. He also circulated counterfeit Indian currency in the market.

    Deepak Kaushik disclosed that he had purchased Indian counterfeit currency from Ashok who is a resident of Paschim Vihar," said DCP Chand.
