MUMBAI: A speeding trailer ran over a constable who had been knocked down from his motorcycle by a car on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) on Friday night.
The incident took place near Amar Mahal, Chembur.
The Tilak Nagar police arrested the trailer driver, Mohammed Shafiq Khan (23), from the spot. Khan has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 (A) (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. He has also been booked underSection 134 of the Motor Vehicles Act (not reporting the occurrence of an accident).
The driver of the car, an Indica, fled the spot. Madhav Nangare (44), attached to the Bandra police station, was returning to his Ghatkopar residence after signing off from work.
In his complaint, eyewitness Shahzad Ansari (39) said, "A speeding car hit Nangare's bike. He lost his balance and fell down. The trailer was coming from behind and ran over him."
Cops are now trying to trace the driver of the Indica through RTO records.
Investigators said they are getting details of the unidentified driver of Indica car from the regional transport office (RTO) who fled away from the spot after hitting Nangare's motorcycle around 11.20pm. "The trailer driver Khan said he should not held responsible for the incident. He claimed that even if he had applied emergency brakes still the vehicle have run over Nangare. I did not apply emergency brakes because the matter could have worsened with more mishaps could have occurred on the highway with the traffic flow towards Thane end," said Tilak Nagar police inspector Vilas Shinde.
