Mumabi: `Mee Sindhutai Sapkal (2010), the Marathi film, directed by Anand Mahadevan won the Best Director Award in the Maharshtra state film awards. Anand hails from Koorkancherry, Thrissur and Sachin Khanolkar was the producer of the film.
Anand had taken inspiration from a true character Sindhu Thay, a social activist, who provides shelter to destitutes. Sindhu Thai, who became a widow at the age of 20, provides shelter to more than 1000 street children. Anand said her true life inspired him to make a film on her. Its the journey of survival of Sindhutai Sapkal who grew up grazing buffaloes in the interiors of Vidharbha.

Anand expressed his unhappiness as despite winning the Best Director Award, he was not invited to the Maharashtra State Awards function held at The Gateway Of India on April 30. He attributed it to bad organization. Anand still remembers after seeing Mee Sindhutai Sapkal Om Puri told him that he couldn't believe that being a Malayali Anand had made a Marathi film.
Adding to his embarrassment was the fact that his producer Sachin Khanolkar got a single pass. Sachin Khanolkar and his wife Bindiya are producing his next film Cotton Country which is inspired from a Mumbai Mirror story (dated June 22, 2008).
The article was about freedom fighter Hari Gour Das who had fought for four years for the country's freedom. But, it took him 30 years to get a freedom fighter's certificate.

Anand has acted in more than 40 films including Apne Begane, Chandni, Khiladi, Bazigar, Me Khiladi Tu Anadi and Vijetha. Anand who directed 12 films had written script for four films. Anand is currently residing in Juhu.
