    India committed to Pak dialogue

Notwithstanding Pakistan getting exposed over providing a safe haven to Osama bin Laden, India is still hopeful of settling all outstanding issues with its neighbour through a bilateral dialogue. Though New Delhi believes that as far as Pakistan and its action on the jihadi network operating from its soil are concerned it should not have unrealistic expectations, strategic experts are not impressed.

“We are committed to resolving all outstanding issues with Pakistan through bilateral dialogue, in an environment free from terrorism and violence. We must keep in mind that we are dealing with complex issues and should not have unrealistic expectations,” External Affairs Minister SM Krishna told Malaysian daily The Star in an interview.

India resumed its Ministerial-level talks with Pakistan recently after calling it off post-Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s ‘cricket diplomacy’ with Pakistan has also been seen in the light of engaging the neighbouring country.

Analyst Brahma Chellaney said, “New Delhi has returned to square one by resuming cricket ties and political dialogue at all levels. India resumed bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan without having secured any anti-terror commitment.”

Nitin Pai, an analyst of geopolitics at the Takshashila Institution, also said, “India’s attempts to engage have substantively failed. The military-jihadi complex has not stopped cross-border terrorism, merely changed its form.”

But New Delhi called the normalization of Indo- Pak relationship “critical for peace, progress and prosperity” for the people of both the sides. “We are cautiously optimistic about the dialogue that we have recently embarked upon with Pakistan,” said Krishna.

Experts, however, pointed out how even three years down the line after the deadly Mumbai attacks shook the entire world, India is still looking up to Pakistan to crack down on terrorist sanctuaries operating “deep inside” its territories.

In such a scenario, India ever attempting a US Navy Seals-like operation in Islamabad to crack down on its most wanted terrorists like Hafiz Sayed and Maulana Masood Azhar does not arise at all, they said.
