Over 63 per cent turnout was recorded till 4 pm in Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency bypoll, which will determine the political future of former MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwarlal told reporters that 63.45 per cent of votes were polled till 4 pm in Kadapa, and 73 per cent polling was recorded at the by-election for the Pulivendula Assembly constituency.
Polling in the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat went on peacefully with no major incidents of violence being reported.
Congress MLA from Kamalapuram G Veerasiva Reddy was put under house arrest following a complaint by YSR Congress party of former MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Polling began at 8 am on Sunday for the by-election to Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly constituencies, which fall under Kadapa Lok Sabha seat, amid tight security.
There are 13.29 lakh voters in the Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency and 1.89 lakh in Pulivendula Assembly segment.
About 12,000 policemen have been deployed for the smooth conduct of the polling process. Among the over 1,500 polling stations in Kadapa, 584 have been identified as sensitive, 187 as hyper sensitive and 487 as troublesome.
Significantly, the polling is being web-cast to ensure transparency. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwar Lal told reporters in Hyderabad that web-casting is being done only in 1,169 polling stations out of the total 1,512 due to the non-availability of BSNL network.
However, videography is being done at the polling stations, he said.
The ruling Congress complained to the CEO that the much publicised web-casting in Kadapa has failed.
Without mentioning the name of Jagan, the party alleged that his armed supporters were travelling in the pass-holding vehicles of the TV channel owned by him. Widespread enthusiasm was witnessed among the voters in the Assembly constituencies of Kadapa like Mydukuru and Badvel, where large number of voters, especially women, stood in queues to cast their votes.
Betting was taking place over the outcome of the bypolls, some reports claimed.
Jagan and his uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy, who is a Congress candidate in the Pulivendula Assembly segment, cast their vote in Pulivendula.
Talking to reporters, Vivekananda expressed confidence that he will win in Pulivendula. Jagan alleged after casting his vote that the Congress has split his family by making his uncle (Vivekananda) contest against his mother.
The polling will be held from 8 am to 5 pm. Bypolls to Kadapa and Pulivendula seats were
necessitated as Jagan and his mother Vijayalakshmi quit as MP and MLA, respectively.
